    Papers to bring

Check the license before you sign

Many people get this wrong: "The contractor said pull it as owner-builder, it's cheaper." That puts you on the hook as the employer: payroll, workers' comp (fines up to $100,000), and the bill if someone gets hurt. A contractor who asks for this usually has no license.

    Next steps

    1. Not sure the job needs a permit? Check in T92, with the fee.
    2. Once it's issued, keep it alive: T285 counts the days.
    3. Fixing work done without a permit? Go to T284.
    4. Budget the job with T90 repair cost. New to permits? T280.
