Write a credit report dispute letter

Pick the bureau, the item and what is wrong. The letter fills in below. Copy it or print it, then mail it certified.

Your letter (English, so the bureau or creditor can read it)

Fill in every [bracket] by hand after you print. This page never asks for your full SSN or full account numbers and sends nothing anywhere.

Common myth: "A dispute can wipe any bad mark." No. Only information that is wrong or can't be verified gets corrected or removed. An accurate late or collection can stay up to 7 years.

Next steps

  1. Pull all 3 reports free, every week, at AnnualCreditReport.com. Find the exact item before you write.
  2. Not sure when an item falls off? Check T233. Want your overall picture first? T230.
  3. Account you never opened? Do the identity theft steps in T239 first, then send this letter with your FTC report.
  4. Credit repair companies can't charge you before the work is done (CROA). The FTC says anything they can do legally, you can do yourself for little or no cost. See what your score costs you in T37.
